Vice President Pence Joins Rep. Barletta to Tout Real-World Benefits of Tax Reform

Press Release

Date: July 24, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Lou Barletta (PA-11) delivered remarks at America First Policies' Tax Cuts to Put America First event with Vice President Mike Pence. Representatives Lloyd Smucker (PA-16) and Tom MacArthur (NJ-03) also participated in the event, which was held in Philadelphia, PA and had over 250 attendees.

"It's really exciting to watch the economy soar after the most significant tax reform in over thirty years," Barletta said. "Last month was the first time in eighteen years that there were more jobs than unemployed Americans. Because of tax reform, 115,000 new jobs have been created right here in Pennsylvania. This is a great opportunity for us to begin to teach the skills for the jobs that now exist - to help people go from welfare to work, because we need them. We need them back in the workforce."

"Lou Barletta has fought relentlessly to turn this country around and deliver for the hardworking men and women, and values of Pennsylvania," said Vice President Pence. "Working with Congressman Barletta, we've cut taxes for working families, we've rolled back red tape on job creators, and Lou's been fighting in particular to end the opioid crisis in our time to give your children the opportunities that they need and the resources that they deserve."

Roughly 73,000 Pennsylvanians have seen increased benefits, raises, and bonuses since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was signed into law on December 22, 2017. Nationwide, 650 companies have announced raises, bonuses, tuition assistance, and expanded retirement options. Corporations brought over $300 billion stored overseas back into the U.S. last quarter alone to invest in American workers and business. Companies are also giving back to their customers - 102 utility companies have lowered rates in 48 states, including Pennsylvania. PPL is giving a monthly seven percent refund to all customers, which adds up to nearly $72 million dollars.

Last month, Barletta's recent legislation to address the opioid crisis, the Treating Barriers to Prosperity Act of 2018, passed the U.S. House of Representatives as part of H.R. 6, the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act, which advances treatment and recovery initiatives, improving prevention, protecting communities, and increasing efforts to combat illicit synthetic drugs like fentanyl. Specifically, Barletta's bipartisan bill would address the impacts of opioid addiction on labor force participation and economic development, and provide communities with the tools necessary to find solutions to this epidemic.
